Weekly eNews

Dear VCMS Families,

We had an amazing first couple of days with our students! The energy on the campus was so positive and we are looking forward to a great school year.  Our teachers worked hard over the summer to prepare for our students' return and have jumped right into their lessons.  Walking through classrooms on both our sites you can see the time spent beautifying classrooms to create academically rich and engaging learning environments for all of our students. We look forward to welcoming our families into the classrooms at our Back to School Night on Thursday, September 7th.

Meal Time:

Valley Charter School is proud to be part of the Universal Lunch Program. Each site will be offering free breakfast, snack and lunch to all of our students this year, free of cost. Good nutrition at school and throughout the school day is critical to a student’s health and ability to learn. Remind your child to get a meal each day.

Coffee with the Principal

  • You are invited to join Mrs. Sadeghi for the first 23-24 “Coffee With the Principal” of the year.  The special gathering will provide you with  opportunities to learn about plans and programs at VCMS and to share your thoughts and ideas with school administration. Find all of the Coffee with the Principal dates here.
  1. When: August 30th from 8:30am-9:30am
  2. Where: The Sherman Way Site (14646 Sherman Way)

A small uptick in COVID-19 cases

We have noticed an  uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases being reported by members of our community since the week before school began and continuing into this week. In light of this, we ask our families to be extra vigilant about symptoms. If your child is experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 (sore throat, congestion, headache, diarrhea, etc),  please err on the side of caution by testing for COVID-19 before sending your child to school. We thank each of our families in advance and have antigen tests available for your use in each school’s office if needed.

Please also remember that if a member of your household tests positive for COVID-19, you are required to notify the school. Please use the links found here.

Electronics Policy Reminder (including cell phones, smart watches, and earbuds)

As shared in back to school communications, we are working very hard at VCMS to establish an environment where cell phones and electronics are not seen or heard during the school day and do not interfere with your child’s ability to engage with school. This policy includes smart watches. We really need each family's help in reinforcing the importance of this policy, including not texting or messaging your child during the school day. Just as cell phones will be confiscated if used, smart watches and earbuds will also be confiscated.

We ask again that families help by  setting time limits on your child's phone or smart watch during the school day. As the owner of your child's phone/account, each and every cell phone has the capability to set WELLNESS or DOWNTIME limits and controls on social media apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, etc. Here are helpful directions for setting limits on your child’s phone.

School Wide Student Message

We want to remind our students that a new school year brings new beginnings and the opportunity to start off the school year strong. It is essential that our students understand the expectations of the school and their teachers along with setting goals for themselves.  If your student has any questions regarding expectations and policies they should ask a teacher. A major part of starting off the year right is to stay organized by using the VCMS agenda. Each student was given an agenda book on Thursday during advisory. It is an expectation that students will write their assignments in their agenda for each class, each day. If students are in class and learn they do not have homework, students should write “No Homework” ensuring families are able to keep track of what is due and when. At the end of the week, students will need a parent signature indicating parents have seen and reviewed their child’s assignments for the week. Monday (or the first day of the week) morning, advisory teachers will check for parent signatures and add the check to the gradebook (10 points, each week). Please help support your child’s organization and responsibility of assignments at home as well as at school!

Spirit Wear

If your child didn’t get a chance to pick up some Valley Charter Middle School spirit wear at orientation, you will have the opportunity to purchase spirit wear at Back to School Night on September 7th.

School Wide Student Message

According to Attendance Works, “by 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.”  It is so important for students to come to school every day and it is also important that they get to their classes on-time.  We will begin our tardy sweep procedures this week to ensure students are getting to class on-time.  This first week will be a pilot week and we will start next week.  Parents/Guardians will receive phone calls letting them know if their student was late to class.  3 unexcused tardies to class will result in a detention.

Classroom Spotlight

In Ms. Ramirez's Spanish class, students are learning the alphabet. Students will be learning words of animals and colors for each letter of the alphabet. Additionally, students will be practicing how to introduce themselves in Spanish.  Students of all levels are proving to be engaged and invested in building up their Spanish skills. You can support this work at home by asking students to identify the difference between the English alphabet and the Spanish alphabet.

8th - Christopher Medina - “For passing out papers and getting copies in the office.” - Ms. Caja

School Wide Student Message

VCMS has once again partnered with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the San Fernando Valley (NCADD).  The NCADD will be presenting at our Community Meeting on September 11th to talk with our students about the impacts of social media and their prevention services.  NCADD will host weekly lunch sessions at both of our campuses this semester to work with our students. Students really enjoyed these sessions last school year and did activities such as painting and creating bracelets.

Classroom Spotlight

In Mr. Tirelli’s 6th Grade Science class, students are working on understanding how energy flows and interacts with the different systems of Earth. Energy is produced by the sun and its radiation unevenly heats the Earth. Students are beginning to make the connection that the interaction of energy with the different systems of Earths gives us the air and ocean currents, our climate, and the many phenomena we experience on Earth.

The moment has finally come when students take over all while bringing awareness to World Hunger Awareness Month. Be sure to be on the lookout for a special project our 6th grade students have in place as well as the fun and exciting events we have planned this month like Roller Skating, Food around the World Event, Dress like a Student Fashion Show, and so much more! New families have to register, set up an account and use the email we have on file for them. If parents have any questions or need assistance, please contact the office.

Health and Wellness Policy

We have had many incidents lately with students bringing soda and other sugary drinks to school.  We want to remind families of our wellness policy that can be accessed here.  Per our policy, staff will return any sugary drinks or candy that students bring to school to parents.  Soda and candy are not permitted on campus.  Further, students cannot bring or have food dropped off that violates our Wellness policy such as fast food from McDonalds, Starbucks, etc.  As stated in our policy, research shows that proper nutrition and physical activity before, during, and after the school day are strongly correlated with positive academic outcomes. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the office.

School Wide Student Message

The ‘One Chip Challenge’ has been making waves across the country and has piqued the interests of our students at VCMS.  We want to keep all of our students safe and are asking for the help of families to ensure these chips are not brought to school.  Any student found with the chip on campus will face the same consequences as violating other school policies.  A recent article by CBS notes the dangers of the chip following the death of a 14-year old boy in Massachusetts. The article includes a visual of the packaging so you know what to look out for.  Thank you for helping to keep our students safe.

Classroom Spotlight

In Ms. Henriquez's 6th Grade Math class, students are wrapping up dividing fractions this week and will start adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals.

We kicked off our weekly lunch sessions hosted by the NCADD; this semester they are focusing their work on media consumption and the impacts it has on the teenage mind. If your student has not participated, remind them it is a great opportunity to learn about and with other teens and the media. During last week's session, students made bracelets as part of their kick off.  We also hosted representatives from LAUSD at our Coffee with the Principal who reviewed the enrollment process for high schools and provided families with a ton of information.  We also kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with fun activities in Spanish class for our 7th and 8th grade students.

We are excited to kick off this week with many more experiences and activities to come!

Model United Nations (MUN)

We are so excited to welcome the YMCA to our campus to run Model United Nations. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the world around them, develop their speaking skills and engage with students from other schools who are representing other countries. Alongside the Y, we will kick off our first session September 28th at the VCMS Van Nuys site from 2:00 - 3:30pm. All students who want to participate are encouraged to attend the informational session on Sept. 28th for more information and program details. Although there is an associated cost for families for students to participate in Model United Nations, the Y does offer scholarship opportunities for qualified families. Please contact Erik Trejo [email protected] from the YMCA with any questions.

Over the next few weeks at our Van Nuys site, we will be getting higher gates for each of the front driveways, a new and higher fence on the south side of the property, and new fence wrap. We wanted our families to be aware as you may see temporary fencing and unwrapped fences for a period of time. We have hired a very experienced fencing company and they will keep our property secured at all times during the process.

School Wide Student Message

This week during Community Meeting our schoolwide message was all about hate vs. respect. We discussed how we are all part of the same community and as such we all need to do our part to learn about and understand each other. Hate speech was defined as any form of expression through which speakers intend to vilify, humiliate, or incite hatred against a group or a class of persons on the basis of race, religion, skin color, sexual identity, gender identity, ethnicity, disability, or national origin.  We have a very diverse school community (by design) and we want to find ways to celebrate each other’s diversity! We discussed that student’s don’t have to agree with their peers’ and their points of view or fully understand their ideas, but we must find ways to RESPECT each other.  Students should give their peers the space and support to be the best versions of themselves.  We also discussed the acronym “THINK” before you speak.  Students should ask themselves:

  • Is it True?
  • Is it Helpful?
  • Is it Inspiring?
  • Is it Necessary?
  • Is it Kind?

Please continue this conversation at home and challenge your child to do better and be better!

Classroom Spotlight

In Ms. Venegas’s 7th Grade Science class, students have been learning how to read the Periodic Table of Elements. They are now researching different elements on the periodic table so they can create a poster of their chosen element that will go on a life-size version of the Periodic Table of Elements.

In Ms. Venegas’s 8th Grade Science class, students have been learning how to determine whether a force is balanced or unbalanced, starting with observing the outcome of arm wrestling competitions in class. They are now calculating the net force on objects that have more than two forces acting on them

Please see our PDA policy here for details about school expectations.  Students violating this policy may receive an infraction for each occurrence. Please talk to your child about your expectations about dating and PDA while in middle school. Open conversations with your child about difficult topics so that they know they can turn to you for guidance and support.

Annual Giving Campaign

As October comes to a close we welcome fall and our 2023 VCMS Annual Giving Campaign (AGC). This is our most important fundraising campaign of the year and our goal is $30,000 and 100% family participation.  We base our budget for the following year, in part, on our AGC numbers.  As a public middle school, VCMS does not receive enough funds from the state of California to cover all of our school costs like campus security, after school sports, and 8th grade grad night.  Help us bridge the budget gap and make your meaningful contribution today by contributing to the Annual Giving Campaign now: in addition to online donations, you can also make a cash or check donation and drop it off in the school offices.  Click here to learn more about the campaign and the Talent Show that ends the fundraising campaign on December 8th!

AGC Talent Show

The 4th Annual virtual VCS AGC Talent Show is coming! The Talent Show will close out our AGC campaign this year on December 8th from 6-8pm. All students are invited and encouraged to participate.  No talent is too big or too small! The video can showcase any talent (while adhering to the VCMS handbook). If students feel more comfortable doing so they may also perform in pairs or groups.  Students can showcase their talents by submitting videos here.  Videos can be no longer than 60 seconds.  Upload videos to this google folder by November 19th. For more information, please visit this page on the school website or contact Rebecca Avery at [email protected].

After School Game Club

We are excited to announce a new after school parent-led club coming to VCMS! Ms. Schneider will be running Game Club starting Friday, November 17th at our Van Nuys site.  The club will run after school beginning at 3:30pm.  This club is open to all students 6-8th grade.  If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Ms. Schneider at [email protected].

**If you have an idea and would like to start your own club contact Ms. Sadeghi ([email protected]) with your idea!

After School Cheer is Coming to VCMS!

arc After School will begin a cheer club for arc enrolled students. If your child is excited about VCMS and wants to cheer on our sports teams, cheer club is right for them! Please make sure your child is enrolled in arc After School as enrollment is a requirement to participate.

Our conferences are not traditional parent/teacher conferences, they are a great opportunity to get to see what your child is working on in their classes. Dear VCMS Families,

We finished off October with our Student-Led Conferences. It was so great to see so many families participate. We are thrilled to announce that 97% of our families attend at least one conference to learn more about their child’s success and goals. Thank you for coming out and supporting VCMS during Student-Led Conference.   Students were able to share what they are learning with their parents and showcase their strengths along with discussing areas for growth.  Thank you to all families that were able to attend!  We also had a fun Spirit Week with pajama day being the favorite day for students and staff.  We look forward to another Spirit Week before the December break.  We were also able to offer “Grill Day” at both of our sites this week hosted by our food service provider.

Annual Giving Campaign

By now, you should have received emails and a letter regarding the 2023 Annual Giving Campaign (AGC).  Many thanks to those who have donated since our launch on October 26th!  As you know, we fundraise to help bridge the gap between public funds provided to our school and the actual cost of supporting VCMS.  These fundraising dollars support our full-time safety officers on each campus, after school sports program, and special activities and field trips throughout the year.  More fundraising dollars equals more money to invest in extra support and activities for our students. We recognize each family will be able to give at a different level. The most important thing is that all families participate by giving a personally meaningful gift. Recurring monthly payments are an affordable strategy for many families.  Your smaller monthly payments add up to a lot each year for VCMS.  You can set up a recurring payment on our donation website: supportvalleycharter.org. We also encourage you to take advantage of your company’s corporate matching program. 100% participation will easily get us to our goal of $30,000!

As of Monday morning, VCMS families have already donated $2080 and 1% of our families have participated.  This is a great start and we are on our way towards our $30,000 goal BUT we need everyone to participate to help us meet our participation goal and exceed our monetary goal. You can set up a recurring payment and make a tax-deductible donation at supportvalleycharter.org or by dropping off cash or check in the school office.

Talent Show

The 4th Annual virtual AGC Talent Show is just around the corner!  The Talent Show will close out our AGC campaign this year on December 8th from 6-8pm. All students are invited and encouraged to participate.  Students can showcase their talents by submitting videos here.  Reminder: videos can be no longer than 60 seconds.  Upload videos to this google folder by November 19th. For more information, please visit this page on the school website or contact Rebecca Avery at [email protected].

Last week was a whirlwind of activities, with our students fully engaged in learning and exploring.  As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our incredible students, dedicated staff, and supportive families. May your Thanksgiving be filled with warmth, joy, and cherished moments with loved ones. Wishing you all a restful and delightful Thanksgiving break!

ABC Lesson

In advisory classes, students will be working on an ABC (Anti-bias Collective) lesson.  For this lesson, students will be asked to bring in several items from home that can fit inside a paper bag.  Students were given paper bags in class to decorate.  The items will be staying in the advisory classroom for 2-3 weeks. We are asking that students do not bring any items that are too expensive, instead they could bring a photo of the item.

Coffee with the Principal

This month’s Coffee with the Principal will focus on community resources and special experiences for students outside of school hours. The Y will share details regarding each program they have to offer and help you learn more about how your community is supporting students through After Hours, Coding, Model UN and Community Service opportunities. We look forward to seeing you Tuesday, November 14th at 8:30am at our Van Nuys Blvd site.

ELAC Meeting WEDNESDAY

Ensuring each of our students meet their full potential is key.  If you want to learn more about how English Learners are supported in their academic setting at VCMS, join us for our ELAC meeting on Wednesday, November 15th at 4:00pm. Use this Zoom link to join us.

Parent Faculty Council Meeting WEDNESDAY

Students and parents, please join us Wednesday, November 15th at 4:30pm to hear about what is happening at VCMS. We hope you can attend. Join us for an informative session. Use this Zoom link to join us.

After School Game Club

We are excited to announce a new after school parent-led club coming to VCMS! Ms. Schneider will be running Game Club starting this Friday, November 17th at our Van Nuys site.  The club will run after school from 3:30-4:30.  This club is open to all students 6-8th grade.  If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Ms. Schneider at [email protected].

Annual Giving Campaign:

  • It’s AGC Pie-in-the-face week!
  • VCMS students: Have you ever dreamed of throwing a pie at Mr. Chris?  Even Mrs. Sadeghi?  If so, you’re in luck!  This week we are running an AGC Pie-in-the-face promotion: AGC donations of $10 or more submitted between Monday 11/13-Friday 11/17 (before nutrition) will earn your student an opportunity to throw a pie at a staff member on Friday (November 17th) at lunch.  Visit supportvalleycharter.org, or drop off your cash or check donation to the school offices.  We won’t reach our goals without your support!
  • AGC update
  • Since the launch on October 26th, we have raised $2,150! However, only 2% of our families have participated so far.  We will not reach our goals without YOUR support!  Funds raised during the Annual Giving Campaign support our full-time safety officers on each campus, after school sports program, and 8th grade grad activities.  Because the AGC happens during the fall, it is our most important fundraiser for budgeting for the 24-25 school year.  Invest in the future of VCMS! Consider doubling your contribution with a company match!  Learn more about company matching here.

Talent show

The 4th annual virtual Valley Charter School AGC Talent Show will be held on December 8th from 6-8pm.  If your student would like to submit a 60 second video showcasing their talent (big or small) please visit this page on the school website for guidelines and links.  All talent show videos are due on November 19th!

Winter Ball

The VCMS Winter Ball is around the corner on December 14th from 5-7pm and we need your help!  Have you always wanted to chaperone a middle school dance?  Now’s your chance!  We need parent volunteers to help decorate, distribute pizza and drinks, chaperone, supervise and more.  Click here to volunteer!

VCS Story Collector

Along with 18 other small charter organizations, VCS is a founding member of the LA Public Charter School Collaborative and a key part of our mission is to raise the public’s awareness of what charter schools are and how we serve our communities effectively.  To that end, we are collecting stories from our families and staff members about two foundational and impactful elements of VCS: the positive, nurturing relationships between students and staff and the power of our diverse-by-design modelDo you have a personal anecdote that connects to either of these topics? If so, please fill out our VCS Story Collector to share! Our goal is to showcase these stories on our social media platforms and potentially incorporate them into a larger story for a news outlet.  Please feel free to reach out to Rebecca Avery or Carolyn Yaffe if you have any questions.

Giving Tuesday Annual Giving Campaign update

This year, your student will directly benefit from the legacy of giving at VCMS. Annual Giving supports our full-time security officers on each campus, our after school sports program, and 8th grade graduation activities.  Since the AGC launch on October 26th, we have raised $5,455 with 32% family participation. The Annual Giving Campaign will end next Friday on December 8th. Our goal is $30,000 with 100% family participation. If you have already given, thank you!  If you have not, we will not reach our goal without your meaningful contribution. This Giving Tuesday, consider making VCMS your charity of choice. Donate here today, or drop off cash or check in the school office!

Classroom Spotlight

In Mr. Coleman’s Algebra class, students are  working on a project designed to assess the students' proficiency with linear equations. Students are designing a water park on a coordinate plane, identifying points, calculating slope, writing equations, solving for midpoint, using the distance formula, and explaining their results in a reflection paper.  Students are also completing their unit on solving equations and will be taking their mastery check on Friday.

In Mr. Coleman’s 7th and 8th grader math class, students just completed their units and this week they have been doing a spiral review bootcamp. We have spent the week reviewing, practicing and reteaching specific 5th , 6th and  7th grade skills. This is the 1st of 5 bootcamps. The goal of these bootcamps is to help students fill in some of the math gaps students have and to build confidence that they can and will be successful in any math class.

School Wide Student Message

As we approach the final stretch of the calendar year, we want to encourage you to support your child in finishing strong. With just three and a half weeks left, this is a crucial and meaningful time for them to focus and work hard. Your continued encouragement, guidance, and involvement in their academic journey can make a significant impact. Remind them of the importance of staying focused, managing their time wisely, and seeking help when needed. Celebrate their achievements so far and help them set realistic goals for the remainder of the year. Your partnership with us in fostering a positive and productive learning environment is invaluable. Let's work together to make these next three weeks of the year a period of growth and accomplishment for your child. Thank you for your ongoing support!

7th Grade Field Trip

We are excited to announce our 7th graders will be going on a field trip to SoFi Stadium on Wednesday, December 20th! We are looking for chaperones. Please contact Mrs. Powers at [email protected] if you are interested in chaperoning. All chaperones need to be livescanned and have a recent TB test on file with the school.

Parent/guardian representatives for Parent-Faculty Council (PFC)

A big thanks to 6th grade parent Iris Hernandez for volunteering to serve as a parent representative on the VCMS PFC, which meets on a monthly basis and helps to review school policies, procedures, and accountability documents.

Our charter allows for two elected parent representatives on the PFC. In the absence of enough parents who want to participate in an election, we seek volunteers. In light of this, we are seeking one more parent or guardian to volunteer to be a regular part of the Parent-Faculty Council. If you are interested in serving on the VCMS PFC, please email Carolyn Yaffe at [email protected].

Annual Giving Campaign (AGC) Update

This is the last week to donate to our most important fundraiser of the year.  The AGC helps VCMS budget and plan for the following year and directly supports our full-time safety officers, after school sports, and 8th grade graduation activities.  Your AGC donation is an investment in the future of our school and ensures that next year’s students have access to the same amazing “extras” that this year’s students receive.  Our goal is $30,000 and 100% family participation. So far we have raised $8,419 with 34% family participation.  We will not meet our goals without your support.  The AGC ends on Friday, December 8th. Donate today.

Talent Show

School Wide Student Message

Middle school can sometimes feel like a big whirlwind. But guess what? You've got this! It's super important to find a balance between school events and the things you love to do. Juggling homework and personal interests might seem tricky, but it's a skill that's going to help you a lot. With the Talent Show and Winter Ball coming up, we want you to make the most of these awesome events. Make sure you keep on top of your school stuff and be on your best behavior. Stay organized, get your work done, and then you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the fun stuff. So, take a deep breath, plan your tasks, and remember, finding that balance will make your middle school journey even more amazing!

School Wide Student Message

In an effort to keep our students, families, staff and community safe, we ask that you review the carpool procedures:

  • Adhere to the speed limit of 5 mph or less.
  • Remember to pull forward as much as possible.
  • Do not drive around other cars; we need you to wait in the line
  • Please keep the music volume to a minimum

6th Grade Sherman Way Families:

  • Please be sure to veer right as you enter the parking lot and drive around to the drop off or pick up gate
  • Please take caution when driving through the parking lot. This includes reducing speed and being cognizant of pedestrians and other drivers. VCMS shares a parking lot with an apartment building for elderly inhabitants and the church; we want to ensure safety for all.
  • At the Sherman Way site, please do not park in front of the church as those spaces are exclusive for church use only.

7th/8th Grade Van Nuys Families:

  • Please pull all the way forward to the “drop off” and “pick up”  sign before allowing students to exit or enter the car.
  • Avoid picking up and dropping off on Van Nuys Blvd.
  • Please refrain from parking in the 7 eleven parking lot when dropping off/picking up your child. This may result in ticketing or towing at the owner's expense. For the safety of our students, never instruct your child to walk off campus and get picked up on the corner or 7 eleven, staff is available at each gate to supervise students but we do not have staff who can supervise the corners or 7 eleven.

Dear VCMS Families,

It was amazing to see so many of our students all dressed up for our annual Winter Ball. The event was a success and that is thanks to many volunteers who donated items and also chaperoned the event. Special thanks to the Events Planning Club led by Rebecca Avery and Carolina Merino. While we kicked off this week with PJs for spirit week, tomorrow we will continue the excitement with our 7th and 8th grade students’ special gift exchange. It is a great time of year to show our appreciation for each other and the students are really excited for this event.  In Community Meeting today we held our first Sports Awards of the school year.  On Wednesday our 7th grade students will be visiting So-Fi Stadium as their 7th grade field trip sponsored by Mr. Coleman. Thank you to all the parents that have volunteered to chaperone!

Required Antigen testing on January 7th

These last few weeks leading up to break have been a real challenge as we navigated cases of COVID that led to many staff and student absences. To do what is within our control to contain any disruptions when we return from break, we are asking families to administer an antigen test to students on Sunday, January 7th.  Antigen tests will be backpacked home on December 19th. In the event that your child tests positive, please complete the appropriate survey.  Please also make sure to report any household exposures at that time, as there are protocols we are required to follow related to those as well. The link to all of the surveys can be found here. Thanks to each family for doing  your part to help keep our community as healthy as possible.

Lost & Found

The lost and found has many clothing items! Please check with the office to see if any of your child’s clothing was turned in. Any items still in the Lost & Found by Wednesday, Dec. 20th will be donated to our local GoodWill.

Lanark Family Medical Clinic

Please see this flier for information on a local clinic that provides low cost TB tests and other services that we believe our families could benefit from. Any parent looking to participate in school event is required to complete a TB test and LiveScan, this location is a cost-friendly option

8th Grade College Field Trips

As we return from Winter Break our 8th grade students will kick off a two-fold field college field trip. Students will visit CSUN (California State University, Northridge) and UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) January 17, 2024 and February 12, 2024. School Wide Student Message

We want to remind families of our wellness policy that can be accessed here.  Per our policy, staff will return any sugary drinks, chips, junk food, candy or other high caloric foods with limited nutritional value that students bring to school to parents.

Dear VCMS Families,

Welcome back! We hope you had a restful and joyful winter break filled with moments of laughter, warmth, and relaxation. As we start a brand-new year together, we are excited to reunite with our incredible students and dedicated staff. We trust that everyone is recharged and ready for the adventures and opportunities that are upcoming.  The second half of the school year brings with it fresh challenges and numerous chances for growth. Let's approach the upcoming months with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a collaborative spirit that defines our VCMS community. Please read below to stay up to date and learn about what is going on at VCMS:

8th Grade College Field Trips

As we return from Winter Break our 8th grade students will kick off a two-fold field college field trip. Students will visit CSUN (California State University, Northridge) and UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) January 17, 2024 and February 12, 2024. On each field trip date, half of our 8th grade students will visit one college and the other half will visit another college.  Every 8th grade student will get to visit both colleges. These trips are being sponsored by Mr. Gomez. If you are interested in chaperoning, please sign up by emailing Mr. Gomez at [email protected]. If you still need to complete your TB and LiveScan, please visit the office for more information. Permission slips will be sent home upon our return from Winter Break.

Community Service Opportunity

On February 10th, Valley Charter Elementary School will host a Community Fair for prospective families.  VCMS students can volunteer to help with games and crafts at the event and earn community service hours.  Please click here for more information and to sign up your student.  Contact Rebecca Avery ([email protected]) if you have questions.

January Menus

As a reminder, each site offers free breakfast and lunch to all of our students this year, free of cost.

Please take a look at our food menus for the month of January.

VCS Story Collector

Along with 18 other small charter organizations, VCS is a founding member of the LA Public Charter School Collaborative and a key part of our mission is to raise the public’s awareness of what charter schools are and how we serve our communities effectively.  To that end, we are collecting stories from our families and staff members about two foundational and impactful elements of VCS: the positive, nurturing relationships between students and staff and the power of our diverse-by-design model.  Do you have a personal anecdote that connects to either of these topics? If so, please fill out our VCS Story Collector to share! Our goal is to showcase these stories on our social media platforms and potentially incorporate them into a larger story for a news outlet.  Please feel free to reach out to Rebecca Avery or Carolyn Yaffe if you have any questions.

Community Partnership: LASAN Clothing Drive

The 2024 Men’s, Women’s, and Children’s Clothing Drive, sponsored by the City Facilities Recycling Program (CFRP) of LA Sanitation and Environment, is here.  From January 2nd through March 1st, 2024, the CFRP will be collecting new and gently used (washed and clean) men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing.  Donated items will be provided to the Livability Services Division of LA Sanitation and Environment, the St. Francis Center, and Inside Safe participants to help Angelenos in need.  For more HERE.

Schoolwide Message

As we approach the final two weeks of this semester, it's essential to recognize the significance of finishing strong. Remember that the effort you put in now not only reflects your commitment to learning but also directly impacts your academic record. The grades you earn will become a part of your permanent transcript, a document that future schools, including high schools, will consider. So, let's make these last weeks count. Use this time to review, seek help if needed, and ensure that your understanding of the material is solid. Your dedication and hard work will not only reflect in your grades but will also set a positive tone for future academic endeavors. Remember, you have the power to shape your educational journey, starting with finishing this semester strong. Your future self will thank you for the effort you put in today.

Dear VCMS Families,

We hope you had a rejuvenating long weekend! As we dive into the last week of the semester, excitement fills the air at VCMS. It's incredible to see the growth, effort, and resilience our students have displayed throughout the semester. We kick off our second session of WIN class tomorrow and look forward to seeing the progress our students make throughout the quarter.  We are also excited for our 7th and 8th grade girl’s soccer team for the chance to play at So-Fi stadium this weekend. Please read on for more details!

Model UN Postponed Until Further Notice

We learned suddenly last week that the instructor for Model UN is no longer running sessions at VCMS and a new instructor has not yet been assigned. When a new instructor is assigned, we will make the announcement via eNews, so please be on the lookout!

Semester 2: Staffing Change and New Student Schedules

As we head into the 2nd semester, below is an overview of the key changes, based on our goals of organizing our classes to best meet students at their “just right” level, as well as a staffing change. Ms. Reyes will not be continuing in the 7th/8th grade writing teacher role in the 2nd semester. We thank her for her service to our students!

At our 7th/8th grade site:

  • We are folding reading and writing into one ELA class, which will be taught by Ms. Caja. Ms. Melgar and Ms. Caja will be co-teaching several periods a day to best support our English learners.
  • Class rosters will be reorganized with the goal of grouping students at their “just right” levels in ELA (this is already occurring in mathematics).
  • Mr. Coleman will be stepping into an advisor role; students who had Ms. Reyes as an advisor will now have Mr. Coleman.
  • Students will have Spanish on a daily basis, rather than every other day.

At our 6th grade site:

  • Ms. Melgar and Ms. Hernandez will be co-teaching two periods a day to best support our English learners.

Community Service Hours Opportunity

On February 10th, Valley Charter Elementary School will host a Community Fair for prospective families.  VCMS students can volunteer to help with games and crafts at the event and earn community service hours.  Please click here for more information and to sign up your student.  Contact Rebecca Avery ([email protected]) if you have questions.

VCMS “Inspiration” Survey

VCMS has gone through some big changes in the last several years. We have worked very hard to refine our curricula to elevate standard-alignment and rigor, invest in intervention support and structures, and provide a wider array of student life experiences to engage students, all while navigating the pandemic and its impacts. At this juncture in our journey, we would love to reflect and  gather VCMS community input on key areas (academic, student life, social-emotional, and soft skills) to spark ideas as we begin planning what we will tweak or introduce to our program in the next school year.

With that in mind, we ask that our VCMS families consider completing this “inspiration” survey to help get our creative juices flowing with input from families. We would love for you to consult with your child as you fill out the survey.

This survey does not replace our regular annual survey, where we ask for levels of satisfaction in key areas such as safety, school belonging, etc.  This survey is purely to  gather inspirational ideas from community members!

There is also a space in the survey to indicate if you are open to joining a (zoom) focus group.

Please respond by February 1st, 2024.

Dine out at El Gallo Giro and support VCMS!

School Wide Student Message

As we approach the last week of the semester, it's crucial to ensure that all assignments are turned in and accounted for. Students, take a moment to double-check your backpacks and folders to make sure nothing slips through the cracks. Parents, we kindly request your support in doing a quick backpack check with your child to ensure all assignments are ready to be submitted. Additionally, now is an opportune time to review your child's grades on PowerSchool together. This collaborative effort ensures that we finish the semester on a strong note, addressing any outstanding assignments or concerns. Thank you for your continued partnership in fostering a successful learning environment.

School Wide Student Message

Today marks the start of a new semester and with that, many scheduling changes and the opportunity to start fresh and strong!  Infractions are reset each quarter and were reset today.  In addition, the cell phone/electronics log is also reset each semester. As we begin the second semester, speak with your student about the STAR habits of attention.  We use the acronym STAR  to remind students of good habits of attention.  This stands for:

  • Sit up to stay engaged and interested.
  • Turn towards the speaker to show other people their ideas matter.
  • Appreciate the speaker’s ideas by nodding and smiling, as they speak.
  • Rephrase the ideas of the person who spoke before you so they know you were listening.

School Wide Student Message

With the start of a new semester we wanted to take the time to send out a reminder of the expectations for reading and writing at VCMS. Student progress in reading and writing depends on lots of time on text at home and at school. We need your support.

All VCMS students are required to:

  • Read their independent reading book for 45 minutes each night and log it in their reading log. Students work with their English teacher to pick a just right book for this time. If you do not see your child reading each night, they are not doing an important part of their class assignments.
  • Ask their parents to sign the reading log (weekly for 6th grade and daily for 7th/8th; see below for pictures of what you should be looking for and signing).
  • Complete 4 writing pages each week. Prompts have been provided for students.

Important Los Angeles School Board Elections Update

All registered voters in Los Angeles County will be mailed a Vote by Mail ballot. Los Angeles County began mailing ballots on February 5. If you have not received your ballot, be sure to check your voter registration status here: https://www.lavote.gov/vrstatus

When it comes to the quality of our school and your child’s education, it’s the locally elected LAUSD board members who make the big decisions. So, please keep education top of mind when you vote in March.

LAUSD School Board members impact many issues that affect charter schools like ours, including the buildings we’re located in, allowing charter schools to expand and/or remain open, and the qualifications of our teachers.

We should all have a say in who makes these critical decisions – please vote on March 5!  See who’s on your ballotMake sure you are registered to vote! The deadline to register is Tuesday, February 20.

Dear VCMS Families,

The past week was a busy, fun-filled week for VCMS students. We celebrated Engineers Week with special presenters in our Science class on Thursday.  The presenters inspired students to think about engineering, architecture, construction and all things that make airports function.  They participated in a hands-on activity and had an interactive experience.  In advisory, students are continuing to prepare for Student-Led Conferences and have been collecting their As in anticipation of the Viper Shop opening!  Please read on for more information.

Join Us in Welcoming New VCMS Staff Member Mr. Austin Volkens

VCMS welcomes Mr. Volkens (Mr. V) who started on February 22nd as our new PE Aide.  Mr. Volkens will help Mr. Lopez to support the large PE classes. Soon they will break students up into two groups to create smaller PE groups!

STEAM Day

In celebration of Engineers Week, we welcomed guest speakers into our science classes on February 22nd.  The speakers were all engineers and architects and they discussed their work, what led to their roles and how their work contributes to making airports and keeping them function. Our students participated in a hands-on activity where they worked together to build tall, stable towers using the materials provided.  This experience was in partnership with LAX and VNY who work with local firms to support all airport needs. The partnership sets out to inspire students to start thinking about their careers using math and science.

Viper Shop

We are so excited to open up our Viper Shop for the first time next Monday, March 4th.  During lunch Mrs. Powers and Ms. Mazda will open the Viper Shop for students. Students will “cash in their As” for fun prize items.  Students can also save up their As for some of the more “expensive” prizes. Please note students can use any assignment from the 2023-2024 school year, as long as the physical assignment is in their possession. The assignment must be printed out so that it can be stamped. Students can use each A, one time.

Open House

VCMS is excited to host our first Open House on March 12th from 5:00pm- 7:00pm. Open House is an opportunity to gain insights into your child's education, understand the curriculum, including projects and assessments, and mingle with teachers and staff who play a crucial role in your child's academic and social developmental journey. We hope to see all of our families attend! In addition, the Kona Ice Truck will be at our Van Nuys site during open house. If your child is in 6th grade (Sherman Way site) please stop by our Van Nuy site to purchase Kona Ice for your family. The profits from Kona Ice will go towards our 8th grade activities.

It is that time of year again when we seek formal survey feedback from our families to inform next year’s planning and our annual Local Control and Accountability Plan.  Our goal is that each of our families complete this survey by Friday, March 22nd, 2024.  Thank you for completing the VCMS family survey: https://surveys.panoramaed.com/valleycharterca/4351432738/surveys

You are able to select the language you would like to take the survey in through a dropdown menu at the top of the page.

Extra Clothing At School

We have noticed many students are bringing extra clothing to school and changing in the bathrooms. Students are also swapping clothing with each other.  Please do not send your student to school with extra clothing as we are trying to eliminate the practice of swapping and changing clothes at school.  We would like to prevent clothing from becoming damaged or go missing as the school will not replace items. Finally, we want to avoid students missing class to go to the restroom and change clothing with friends. Please support our efforts at school by checking student backpacks regularly and making sure students are only bringing school supplies to school.

Community Service Opportunity: Cesar Chavez Day - March for Justice Participation Competition

Valley Charter Middle School has been invited to participate in the Cesar Chavez Day March for Justice Competition on March 17, 2024.  VCMS students can earn Community Service hours for participation.  Students can arrive as early as 7:00 am at 0736 Laurel Canyon Blvd., Pacoima, CA 91331 to set up chairs, booths, fill boxes, prepare for march.  If you do not want to stay for the March, you will be done by 11am.  If you would like to stay for the March, the event ends closer to 2pm.

Student-Led Conferences Next Week! (March 18-22)

It is not too late to sign up! Student-led conferences with your child’s teacher are next week! The purpose of student-led conferences is to put the student in the driver’s seat to share their learning, growth and academic challenges with parents. These conferences provide an opportunity for students to share their progress and learning with their parents with the guidance of their teacher and through self-reflection. Student-led conferences are a celebration of learning and an opportunity for goal setting. Our goal is to reach 100% of our families, giving each child their time to shine before their teacher and family. To sign-up for your conference, please visit this link: https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Valley_Charter_Middle_School

Dear VCMS Families,

Welcome back VCMS families! We hope all our families had a wonderful and restful spring break.

Before break, many students qualified for our PBIS challenge and watched a show and ate popcorn during lunch.  Mr. Gomez sponsored a spontaneous Scavenger Hunt for our 7th and 8th graders between the last two periods of the day.  We are excited for the remainder of this school year, knowing how swiftly time tends to pass. It is our priority to ensure you stay informed and up-to-date with all the exciting events and activities taking place at VCMS. Our Viper Shop was open again today for students to cash in their As for various prizes.

Thank you to all our families who participated in our Student-Led Conferences before break; as a school 98% of our families signed up for conferences and had a chance to see their child’s academic progress. Involved parents make a huge difference in the lives of their children and VCMS is thrilled to see how many parents come out for conferences.

Attendance Review Committee

This week the Attendance Review Committee is sending letters to anyone who is chronically absent for any and all reasons (both excused and unexcused) . If you receive a letter, please note the intent is to remind you of the importance of school and to have a reference point of how often your child is absent.  This first letter is a warning letter to remind you of the importance of being present as long as your student doesn't have a fever, isn't contagious, and feels ok.   We understand the wording in the letter is strong, but the intent is to emphasize how important attending school is. There is no need to call the office as we are aware of the students receiving this letter, and again, it is just a warning letter. Let's work together to make sure our students are attending school so they can be the best versions of themselves!

April Menus

As a reminder, each site offers free breakfast and lunch to all of our students this year, free of cost.

Please take a look at our food menus for the month of April.

Viper Appreciation

Each week we like to spotlight a few students who are really going above and beyond. This week we recognize:

6th - Fernando Paredes - "Being a helpful classmate" - Ms. Hernandez

7th - Mandana Maleki -  “For meeting your weekly iReady goal.” - Ms. Ramirez

8th - Keity Leiva Guerrero - “For being a detailed office assistant! Keity has a great attitude and is always willing to go over and above.” - Ms. Keri

School Wide Student Message

This week we begin our third and final iReady testing session of the school year.  Students will be testing once a day through Math, ELA, Science and History classes. The iReady diagnostic scores allow teachers to individually support student needs and provide the best support. For more information on how you can support your child for iReady, visit the iReady Family Center.

With iReady testing this week and SBAC testing coming up next month, we want to remind families about ways to prepare your student for testing.  Make sure your student gets a good night’s sleep the night before testing.  Your student will perform better if well rested.  Tired students have difficulty focusing and can be easily agitated by challenges.  In addition, ensure your student eats a healthy breakfast. Avoid high sugar cereals and provide a high-protein, nutritious breakfast for your student.  Children learn better if their stomachs are full.  However, sugary, heavy foods can make them sleepy or slightly queasy which is not much better than an empty stomach.  If your student eats breakfast at school be sure they arrive early enough to eat before class starts. Breakfast is served at school every morning.
