4th Grade Project Based Learning: Molecules and Organisms

PBL Case Study: 4th Grade Molecules and Organisms

Introduction to the Project

In 4th grade science, students explore core life science concepts related to molecules and organisms. At Valley Charter Elementary School, 4th grade teachers have developed a project-based learning unit that delivers essential content through an engaging, inquiry-driven approach. The project centers on the internal and external structures of plants and animals, emphasizing how these structures support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. As part of this work, students investigate sensory systems and examine specific adaptations that enable organisms to thrive in their environments.

CA state standards addressed:
  • 2-LS4-1. Biodiversity and classification of plants and animals

Driving Question: (The real-world concept to which the standards connect)

  • How do the internal and external structures of plants and animals support their survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction?

Lessons and Activities

1. Field Trip to the California Science Center

Students gather background information about internal and external structures during a field trip to the California Science Center.

4th grade on a field trip to the california science center looking at the aquarium

4th grade at the science center listening to a docent

2. Nonfiction Text and Multimedia Research

Students build content knowledge through video resources, guided reading, and note-taking with nonfiction texts, and continue their research by completing a scavenger hunt on the LA Zoo website.

4th graders researching molecules and organisms

4th graders taking notes on their research about molecules and organisms

3. On-Campus Animal Observation and Presentation

Wildlife Waystation visits for an on-campus presentation and students have the opportunity to observe live animals and learn about their characteristics and behaviors.

Students get a visit from a hedgehog

Staff from the wildlife waystation bring animals to students on campus to learn more about

4. Hands-On Application: Bird-Wing Simulation

Students make paper airplanes to simulate how variations in wing structure affect flight.

Students fly paper airplanes with wing variations

5. Student Collaboration and Final Presentations

Finally, students collaborate and present to their 4th grade peers on plants and animals they’ve chosen to study as they finish their PBL.

Students discuss what they've learned about molecules and organisms for their research project
